J Petite and Bryanna Casey

Photography: Michelle Herrick
For the past couple months I've learned that I absolutely love working with talented women whether they are photographers, models, makeup artists, hairstylists, and even local designers. Being constantly surrounded by creative, strong, driven, and talented women is such an inspiration to me.

With that said I am excited to introduce you to Bryanna Casey from Bryanna Casey Makeup who I will be collaborating with on future projects. You excited?! You should be because I'm way excited!!!

Before we dive into our projects here is a few things about Bry, and why she is so amazing!

1. What got you interested in makeup artistry?

I grew up with an artist for a mother, so art has been a part of my entire life.  High school is where I began to experiment and build an interest in using makeup as a medium.  My mother continues to have a huge influence on the way I approach makeup as an art. A Pivotal moment though that I would say that really gave me the push into pursuing makeup as a career was the publication of The Self titled Book “Alex Box” by Photographer Rankin.  Combining fine art , surrealism & makeup.  It was one of those things that you see and your immediately changed.  I had this feeling of certainty, I have to do this.

2. How long have you been in the industry?

About 5 - 6 years.  In 2011 I moved to New York to go to school and graduated from Make Up Designory’s Master Artistry Program.  This jump started my free-lance career as a Makeup / FX Artist for Film and TV, Moving to Phoenix changed my course a bit.  From Zombies to brides, I have built my own bridal business (Bryanna Casey Makeup) from the ground up.

3. What is your favorite look you like to create?

My “go to look” is a clean beautiful face, bold brow, none or very little eye makeup and a bright red lip.   It’s what I wear almost everyday. I never get sick of it.  What I enjoy creating is something unplanned.  Seeing where I start and finish and not knowing beforehand.

4. What's the best and worst thing about working Fashion Week?

The best thing about Fashion Week….where to start?  The travel, the beautiful cities.  I am surround by the most talented artists in the industry, watching their thought and creation process, seeing the importance of hair and makeup in completing a designers entire look and vision for their line.  It’s free education, I learn so much every time I go.  Not to mention the team of people that I am surrounded with and work with. It really is a family of artists who love and support one another.  There is nothing like it.

The worst part of fashion week? …. that it only lasts a month :)

5. What's your absolute favorite brand of cosmetics?

My favorite brand at the moment is Melt Cosmetics.  Their eyeshadow stacks are to die for, and their lipsticks, perfect.  Two makeup artists that I really admire in the industry created this cosmetic line, to be able to show them support is just a bonus because the products speak for themselves.

6.  If you have five minutes to get ready what are your go to essentials?

5 minutes to get ready?? A good moisturizer like Charlotte Tilbury’s face moisturizer Or Truself Organics Moisturizer.  Lucas’ Pawpaw Ointment on the lips, Anastasia Beverly Hills dip brow pomade.  Oribe texture spray for the hair and done….Brows and skin are a must for me.

7. Biggest makeup faux pa you see women do?

Makeup faux pa - wearing a foundation that does not match your skin.  - This is a tough one because for me personally, I wear a foundation that is more olive than my face but it blends and compliments the color of my neck and chest which tends to be cooler than my face.  I think women have a hard time finding that perfect blend between the skin on your face and on your body and how to make the two meet.

8.  What makeup trend is your favorite, and one that you absolutely hate?

Do I have to pick just one! My favorite trend right now, or subject matter would be the ombre lip. Really, the introduction of color, bold color, to the everyday consumer of makeup.  Indie makeup companies are popping up everywhere and multiplying.  It’s exposing an array of products, textures and colors to the world, that aren’t just for professional makeup artists anymore. I think its created a global buzz and people are really excited about it.

I don’t know if there is a trend I can say in full confidence that I hate but one I just can’t seem to jump on the bandwagon for is shimmer on the brow bone.  It seems to have fallen to the way side, which I think is a good thing, best to keep any eyeshadows just below the brow bone a matte color.

9.  Lipgloss or lipstick?

Lipstick always and forever. :)

For those professional or aspiring makeup artists living in the Arizona valley Bryanna Casey is teaming up with Stephanie Neiheisel to host a makeup workshop starting in July. This first class will be for makeup professionals only, and the second for anyone interested in learning more from this talented duo. Email Bryanna for further inquires.
