Wellness Wednesday: How To Treat Adult Acne

If  I could wave my magic wand, and could get anything in the world it would be to get rid of my adult acne. Now my acne isn't horrible, but I will get a flare up once a month. When I do break out it will usually be around my forehead, and around my brows from waxing.

Annoying..... Isn't my skin suppose to stop doing this after 21???

My skin is a combination of oily and dry, and has a mind of it's own. I have spent so much money trying to find products that work for my face, and I am still on the hunt....

Here are some of the products and methods that have worked to clear up my skin.

Skin Care

The basis for good skin is good products. I discovered the Ole Henkrisen product line a couple years ago, and ever since I have been hooked. The first product from the Ole Henriksen line that got me hooked was the Vitamin Plus Moisturizer. I will never use another moisturizer because this my favorite product of all time. I've tried a bazillion moisturizers before trying the Vitamin Plus, and nothing seemed to work. I needed something that was light weight, oil free, acne friendly, could wear under foundation without movement throughout the day, and is hydrating. I've never had a moisturizer that meets all my requirements until I bought this one. BUY IT!

This African Red Tea cleanser is my absolute favorite because it clears my skin without being drying. I've tried using "acne" cleanser, but they have all left my skin feeling dry and tight after a single wash. I use this face wash with my Clarisonic, and both of them together eliminate the grime off my face to minimize breakouts. Please note that just like a tooth brush, you need to replace you Clarisonic heads.

When I do get a pesky zit to appear I use one of my favorite spot treatments Bosica Clear Complexion Willow Bark. This is such a great product because it's not an irritant. Lot's of acne products contain Salicylic Acid which is super drying on me. The willow bark in this products reduces redness, and inflammation.

Makeup

Foundation

It makes me sad to think that I have spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars trying to find makeup that will a) match my skin tones, b) give good coverage, c) light weight, and d) won't make me breakout. After years of searching I finally found products that work for me, and the formulas that are friendly for my skin. Whenever I try a foundation the number one thing I look for is that it needs to be OIL FREE! Anything with oil trends to clog my pores, and makes me break out. My two favorite foundations are the Laura Mercier Oil Free Silk Creme, and the Urban Decay Naked Skin. I love both of these foundations because they both have yellow undertones, which is perfect for my skin. I wear the Laura Mercier foundation typically if I am going to do a shoot, and wear the Naked Skin on an everyday basis.

Primer

I like to wear primer when I want my skin to be extra smooth, and have my foundation last longer. The problem here is that tons of primers contain SIlICA. I have noticed that if I use anything with Silica it will not only make me breakout, but also irritate my skin. I just started using this primer from Makeup For Ever, and so far I really like it. Since it's water based my skin doesn't get clogged or irritated, and I'm left with a smooth look.

Pillow Sheets

You have probably heard of changing your pillow sheets regularly to prevent your face from breaking out. I will admit I am horrible at doing this, and should do it more often than not since I don't wash my hair for a week. I notice that when I change my pillow case every other day that my skin clears up during a break out.

Diet

For some reason or not the one food I have noticed that will cause me to break out is CHOCOLATE. There isn't much scientific evidence behind this, but it definitely makes me flare up. While my poison is chocolate, try eliminating foods during a breakout to pin point what might be causing the flare up.

Water also plays a huge role in keeping my skin clear. I notice that when I drink tons of water everyday, that my skin will be less prone to flare ups.

Medications

My adult acne is due to multiple factors: genetics (on my dads side), and the fact that I got the Mirena IUD. Prior to getting on the Mirena I was on Accutane, and let me tell you "IT WAS HELL!" When I finished my round of Accutane I was acne free for 4 months until I got the IUD because I was getting married. A week after I got on the IUD I broke out in huge pustules a week before my wedding!!! You can imagine how devastated I was thinking I was going to get married looking like a pizza. My dermatologist loaded me up on some steroids, which cleared me up just in time for my wedding. I  started breaking out from the IUD because I am part of that 1% that will produce androgens while being on the IUD, and thus leading to acne. To control the effects of my IUD I currently take a diuretic called Spironolactone.

Forever Young

Dress: ILY Couture c/o (on SALE!) / Necklace: Baublebar (on sale for 50% off for limited time) / Bag: Target / Shoes: Jeffrey Campbell / Lips: MAC-Russian Red / Lashes: Layers-n-Lashes

It has officially been 27 days since I arrived in Utah, and I can't believe how time has flown by. The crappy thing about this whole "being an adult" thing is that time flies by WAY too fast! Ugh..... why can't time stop, and we all be young forever?! Please????

I only have 12 more days in this summer paradise until I go back home. What I have loved most about my trip to Utah is that I feel like a kid again. Staying up late, sleeping in until 10, hanging with friends, and hardly any responsibilities. Todd and I have been so driven and serious since the day we got married because I wanted to go to medical school (obviously medical school turned into being a blogger and PB teacher), and he wanted to pursue dentistry. We committed to being focused, lived the poor student life, and what we worked so hard for is now becoming a reality.

I honestly have lived every minute of being in Utah, and have tried to take advantage of my time here.

Coral & Lilac Love - Rachel Parcell Skirt Petite Review

Photography: Jamee Edwards
Skirt: Rachel Parcell (hot pink one is on sale here! Super similar here) / Top: J.Crew (on SALE!) / Necklace: Baublebar (50% OFF for limited time!) / Ring: Gorjana c/o / Bag: Target (similar herehere, and here) / Shoes: Make Me Chic c/o / Lips: Anastasia Beverely Hills-Rio
I can't even tell you how in love I am with this outfit! Color, color, color, and even more color! I got this skirt in as a gift from a friend from the Rachel Parcell line, and immediately fell in love. Total swoon worthy if you ask me. You need ;) I was originally going to pair this skirt with some type of white lace top, which to me is a "no brainer." Yes, that is a pretty look, but let's mix things up a bit. I love to make outfits unique, and play around with color. With the skirt in hand, I immediately headed to my closet. I took the skirt and start comparing it to my color coordinated closet. As I went down the rows of blouses this coral color immediately popped out at me.

I didn't want this outfit to look like I just paired a t-shirt with a skirt.... Again it's all about getting creative. Since the skirt is so flowy I needed my top to be fitted so that my body doesn't get lost in the outfit. I knotted the tee to give my torso that extra hug, and it gives the outfit that cool casual vibe. You know I love a bold accessory so I added my favorite necklace, and summer bag to go with the look.

Petite Review for Rachel Parcell skirt: Can I just say how gorgeous Rachel Parcell's line is! If you haven't already looked at her site, you need to go immediately. Let me warn you though.... be prepared to fall in love!!

I loved when this skirt came in, but it was rather large on my body. I got it in an xs, and it was too big in the waist. My tailor took in about 4 inches at the waist, and because of that I lost some of the pleated fabric in the skirt. This skirt is suppose to be a midi length, but was floor length when I put it on. My tailor cut the skirt so that it was able to fall at that midi length on my body.

Let's get to some more exciting business. The winner of the Kira Grace Giveaway is....

Rana D! Congrats!!! Thanks for all who entered!

Workout Wednesday: 5 Ways to Maintain Your Workout Schedule While Traveling

While traveling during the summer months it can become difficult to maintain your workout schedule. I am a creature of habit so I have to keep my workouts consistent every time I travel. With being home for a month I have definitely become more creative in finding ways to workout without paying full membership fees. Here are some ways that you can maintain your workout regimen without spending top dollar.

1. Week Trials

Lately I've become obsessed with doing hot yoga, and was doing it 4x a week for 3 weeks prior to me coming to Utah. I didn't want to stop doing yoga for a whole month so I looked into the pricing of studios in the valley. What I found out was that tons of studios offer 1-2 week trials for cheap, and sometimes free. Prior to going on a trip, try researching local studios around where you will be staying to see if they offer a cheap trial. Two studios that I have loved doing while being in Utah has been Salt Lake City Bikriam & Core Power Yoga

2. Hotel Gyms

If you are staying at a hotel during your travels they will most likely have a gym available for use. The use of the hotel gym is normally complimentary of your stay, and will be usually stocked with free weights and cardio machines.

3. Living Social / Groupon

If you haven't already gotten on the Groupon bandwagon then, STOP READING THIS, and go get on NOW! Groupon and Living Social are such great resources to get killer deals on anything including fitness memberships. During the summer months the attendance for boutique workouts decrease due to people traveling, school being out, and people doing outdoor recreation. To increase summer attendance studios will usually do a Groupon/Living Social to increase attendance. You can find some amazing deals that are a fraction of what fitness studios normally charge.

4. Old Fashioned Outdoor Fun

Even though you might be a gym rat at home try getting outside for outdoor recreation. When I come to Utah I absolutely love going up in the mountains to run, hike, and hike. It's a double whammy. You get not only get physical activity, but get to enjoy the great outdoors. Make sure that you pack good shoes, and activewear before you leave home to vacation. Best part about outdoor fitness is that it's FREE!

5. Fitness DVDs

Since my traveling only consists of going to Utah and Arizona, I get all my Pure Barre I want since I teach when I come home. For those of you who aren't as fortunate to maintain a standing membership in different states try bringing some type of exercise DVD with you during your travels. Try investing in small equipment such a light weights, ball, or a tube that will fit easily in a suitcase. Great thing about DVDs is that if you aren't able to make it out to a studio that you can still workout in the comfort of your hotel.

PS, you might of noticed the pop up when you first came to my page. I am going to start doing a weekly newsletter that will summarize all my blog posts, share items from my blog that went on sale, exclusive content, and exciting happenings that will be on my blog.
