Workout Wednesday: Runners Side Cramp Solution

Whether you ran track in high school or are an avid marathon runner, you've probably experienced the dreaded side cramp.

About 4 years ago I became an active runner. It all started off as a New Years resolution joke that I would run a marathon in 4 months, and the rest is history. Being an competitive athlete I turned that resolution into a reality. Within 4 months I ran my first marathon. While the actual marathon was difficult, the training was even worse. When I finally started my journey to become a marathon runner, I would always get these wicked side cramps. I found myself always stopping in the middle of a run to wait out the pain. This not only ruined my momentum, but was also discouraging to keep going.

Finally someone gave me the best advice on how to eliminate those side cramps while running. Hallelujah! What you do is whatever side gets the cramp lift that arm in the air. You then take the opposite hand and put pressure on the area of pain. After a couple breaths the pain goes away.
No joke y'all! After the first time I did this trick, I was in complete shock. While I looked like I was waving to people as a ran by (the reciprocated looks are always a little weird), the cramp was finally gone. I was able to get rid of the pain, and stick with my running goal. For pain that is a little deeper, take deeper breaths, pushing the air into the stomach.

When the you get the cramp , lift the arm, and pass the finish line like a champ ;)
