First Taste of the East Coast

Jumpsuit: Chriselle x JOA / Bracelets: Baublebar c/o + old similar here / Earrings: Baublebar / Lips: Pucker & Pout - 1x First Love 2x Aussie Rose

Sorry it's been quiet on the blog for a few days, but Todd and I went out of town to Pennsylvania. The purpose of the trip was for Todd to show me Pennsylvania, and to get a jump start on finding a home to buy.

We flew into Baltimore Maryland on Thursday afternoon, and drove three hours to get to Danville. I've always lived within 30 minutes of an airport, and didn't realize what a luxury it is to live close to one. We got into Danville around 9 pm, and then went straight to bed.

Friday wasn't super productive since we didn't have a realtor scheduled to show us houses. The whole day was spent in a car driving from city to city to learn more about the area. As I was driving through the surrounding cities it was incredibly hard to find areas where I would fit in. Where will I work? Where will I hang out? Where will I find friends?

As I was learning more and more about the area I realized that the city is filled with either elderly individuals or families with kids, and not a whole lot of young working adults. Maybe my current perspective is too narrow, and felt an immediate state of depression when I couldn't find my immediate place in the city.

When Saturday hit we kicked off the morning by meeting with a realtor. As the realtor was getting to know us better she asked whether I had work when I moved. This has been a touchy subject for me over the past few months, and got a pit in my stomach as I responded that nothing is here for me. Why is the work subject so touchy for me? Over the past few years I have refused to live my life without passion, and only do things that make me excited in the morning such as blogging, photography, and most of all teaching Pure Barre. The thought of doing something to just "work" is something that irks my soul, and never want to a live my life without purpose and passion.

As we went from house to house their wasn't a ton of options that matched our lifestyle. We think we found a place that is 25 minutes from the hospital, and hopefully we will be putting in an offer.

During the whole trip I hardly spoke to Todd because I was so inside my head trying to figure out how am I going to make this work. It's easy to say that "As long as we have each other we will be happy," but I learned very quickly this year that his time at the hospital puts me in a situation where I need to find places and people that make me happy.

This trip definitely put into perspective how HARD this move is going to be for me. I'm going to be tested in ways I didn't know were possible. My biggest challenge is being able to find happiness in new forms, and learn how to adapt to a life that is completely different than anything I've ever expected.

  2. Hi, I stumbled on your blog from Instagram. I think we have some mutual friends (we’re Midwestern alumni too) and I just couldn’t help to comment after reading this post. I so get it. We moved to a small town in West Virginia for residency and it has been the hardest thing we’ve ever done. I’ve gone through cycles where I can find the good (that’s usually when it’s green and beautiful here) and other times when I count down the days until we move. I’m not sure if you guys will be there permanently, but I just wanted to offer some encouragement while you uproot to a new, totally foreign place. You’ll find your groove, hopefully there will be some other cool wives out there to connect with. One good thing about being out here is the opportunity to travel all over the east coast since so many places are just a few hours’ drive. We just got back from an awesome trip to DC and last year visited Philadelphia. Best wishes from another medical wife.

  3. Hi Jessica! I have been reading your blog for a few years now, and this post spoke to me so much. I went to college in Charlotte, NC (big city) and moved to Vermont in 2017 for my first full time job. I work in radio- so you often have to move for the job. Anyways- boy was that a shock! The town I lived in up in Vermont sounds like Danville- lots of elderly and lots of families with kids, no young professionals. I was 22 and single- yikes!! There were lots of nights that I cried myself to sleep (and the job ended up being a bad fit). Anyways, I left for a new job offer back South this winter- BUT I wanted to share with you that I did finally end up making friends! I was able to meet a few bloggers up there (few and far between but there were some), and meet people through a church. It really took like 6 months to make friends, but it did happen even in small town Vermont! I have no doubts you will meet some good friends in PA- I will be crossing my fingers the move goes well for you and your husband!!

    xoxo A
